Who can become an advocate? Are you an ordinary person, over the age of 17, who lives or works in East Cheshire?Would you like to share some of your time with a person who has learning disabilities? Could you help someone to have their own say in things and to gain acceptance into the community? If you can answer yes to the questions above, then you can become an advocate. As an advocate, you would give your time freely. You would work completely independently, bringing your own ideas, skills and qualities into the life of a person with a learning disability. How much time does it take? The amount of time you give depends entirely upon you and the person you support (your partner). It depends upon your common interests, goals and activities. What is more important is your reliability and commitment to your partner. What is the selection process? There is a simple application form to complete and we require two references. Once we have this information, we will arrange an informal meeting where we discuss learning disabilities and advocacy. We also carry out a Criminal Records Bureau check. Then what happens? If everything is OK, we arrange a one-to-one induction process for you which is adapted to suit your needs and experience. What support will I receive? When you become an advocate, your loyalty lies 100% with your partner. ECA staff will offer you any support you need, if and when you ask for it. Meetings with other advocates are encouraged and there are also opportunities for attending occasional training courses and information sessions. What do I do now?You can either complete
our on-line application form, email us on - e.c.advocacy@btconnect.com or call us on 01625 429922.
We will be
happy to come and meet with you and answer any questions you may have. |
